Kenya Film Industry!
I think it’s safe to say that Kenya film industry has been struggling for years now. But there is always light at the end of every tunnel. Things are now looking up for the actors and the industry as a whole. Movies are being created left right and centre, and we can’t be more proud. We have a thousand local shows in almost all the local channels.
Kenyan actors are doing well both locally and internationally and we don’t even brag about it, I lied, we actually do. Almost half of last year and early this year people have been buzzing about one Kenyan actor who has been doing so well in Hollywood. Funny thing is he has been representing us so good out there for over a decade.
Edi Gathegi was born in Nairobi, Kenya back in 1979. He moved to the US and was so passionate about playing basketball till he injured his knee that led to depression. Fate then led him to something that he is even much better at and that is acting.
Edi has starred in so many films and Tv shows that are doing so well in Hollywood. Some of the films and shows that he starred in include Twilight, Gone Baby Gone, House, the Blacklist, and Into the Badlands, just to name a few. Recently he has been featured in a short film ‘Legacy’ produced and directed by the Grammy winner and Hip-Hop icon Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Carter.
There is nothing as uplifting as seeing a successful person that knows and is, in fact, proud of his roots, Edi is one of those people. During his visit in Kenya on December 2017, he had an interview with lifestyle magazine and had this to say, “I’m inextricably bound to my roots, I know exactly where I came from and you can’t take that out of yourself”. Even with his hard work, Edi has not received any of these big wards like Oscar or Emmy and he is not even bothered by it. When he was asked about it he said, ‘if you’re not enough without an Emmy, you’ll never be enough with an Emmy’.
Other than Edi, who we are so proud of we have Lupita Nyongo who won an Oscar Award back in 2013. Lupita has also been doing well in Hollywood and we can’t wait to watch the new film she starred in ‘Black Panther’ that will be released on 12th of February 2018. That is not all, on 23rd of January 2018 Oscars announced their 90th annual award nominees and guess what, a Kenyan Film ‘Watu Wote’ has been nominated for the best live action short film. At this point nobody can tell us nothing, we are winning and we love it.
Have you guys watched ’18 hours?’ well let’s just say you are missing out. It is also a Kenyan movie starring one of the famous radio presenters ‘Nick Ndeda’. The film follows a rookie paramedic who survives 18 hours in an ambulance for the life of a road accident casualty who is denied admission to the hospital. Other movies we can’t wait to watch is John Kiriamiti’s based on his novels and Kimani Maruge movie, a story of an 84-year-old man who joined a primary school in Kenya.
We wish our actors all the best and hope they continue to make us proud!
